Infographic from MSDSonline Illustrates OSHA’s New Injury & Illness Reporting & Recording Rules

OSHA instituted new injury and illness reporting rules on January 1, 2015. Employers in the U.S. are now required to report to OSHA within 24 hours any workplace accident that results in an inpatient hospitalization, amputation or eye loss. Employers are still required to report workplace fatalities within eight hours of finding out about them.
“January is always a big month for OSHA Recordkeeping because of the February 1 deadline, which requires non-exempt employers to post their summary of injuries and illnesses for the previous year using OSHA Form 300A,” said P.J. Schoeny, product manager for Incident Management at MSDSonline. “This year, January brought with it even more Recordkeeping Standard obligations, but this time on the reporting side, and the changes affect every employer.”
Beyond reporting rules changing in January, OSHA also adjusted the industry codes used to determine which industries are covered by the recording requirements of the Recordkeeping Standard. Previously, Standard Industrial Codes (SIC) were used to identify non-exempt employers. Going forward, OSHA will be identifying exempt and non-exempt employers using North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). This change has resulted in some industries and employers losing exemption status, and others gaining exemption status. Visit OSHA.gov for a full list of covered industries.
