REACH Deadline – Last Call to Register Chemicals

In global regulatory news, the November 30, 2010 REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) deadline that requires companies to register the most widely used or most dangerous chemicals, is fast-approaching.According to, "REACH is a major reform of EU chemicals policy, affecting all global supply chains that produce and use chemicals."

This is the first of three staggered registration deadlines, and it covers dossiers for chemicals produced or imported in annual volumes of 1,000 tons or more, as well as chemicals with certain hazardous properties used in quantities of 100 tons or more per year.

Companies must also prepare for the January 3, 2011 Classification, Labeling, and Packaging (CLP) regulation deadline, which requires them to notify the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) of their chemicals.

In an ECHA published interview from earlier this year, Senior Researcher at ETUC and Member of the ECHA Management Board, Dr. Tony Musu stated that he believed most companies didn't even know about the European Union (EU) REACH and CLP regulations, or their approaching deadlines. Dr. Musu expressed his concern, saying that, "Ignoring them can have serious consequences for companies.”
